http://www.chimneycap.co.uk/trade.htm

The C-Cap chimney cap is designed to help minimise heat loss from disused chimney flues. It provides 100% protection of the flue against rain, hail, snow, nesting birds, leaves etc. - protecting it from damage while still allowing ventilation of the flue.

o Fitted in seconds to any standard round pot up to 280mm diameter
o 100% protection from rain, snow, nesting birds etc.
o Helps eliminate wasteful heat loss.
o Blends neatly with the traditional character of the stack
o Economical and totally reliable

Included is an insect screen to help protect your chimney from bees and wasps.

C-Cap - How it works

The C-Cap chimney cap is a robust, tough, moulded cowl provides total protection from the elements, nesting birds etc.and is designed to fit any standard design round chimney pot, up to 280mm external diameter.

Fitting (or removal) is simple and takes seconds, requiring no special skills. However, gaining access to pots should only be undertaken by a suitably experienced person using appropriate access equipment.

o Pots need to be in sound condition. Any cracked pot should either be replaced or suitably bound to accept lateral pressure from the retaining spring wires.

o The C-Cap is for use on redundant, disused chimneys only. Care needs to be taken that capping is not carried out to any flue that is still in use. Check it first!

o As with any capping, the flue should preferably be swept clean and any obstruction (e.g. bird's nests) removed.

o C-Cap has been site-tested over 10 years and in severe gale conditions from Cornwall to the Orkneys.

C-Cap - Technical Information

o Tough, moulded cowl provides total protection from the elements, nesting birds etc.e C-Cap fits neatly over the chimney pot where it is retained by galvanised steel spring wires.
It can be fitted to any standard round pot up to 280mm diameter and is light enough to allow several to easily be carried up the roof, where fitting to the pot takes a matter of seconds.

o Many thousands of C-Caps are fitted throughout the UK, as far north as the Orkneys, and it is the only cowl for disused chimneys that guarantees 100% protection against rain, snow, gales, birds etc. - in fact everything nature can throw at it.

o All C-Caps are supplied with an optional insect screen to provide additional protection against nesting wasps. This can simply be fitted with the C-Cap at the discretion of the local specialist, as appropriate.

o Pots need to be in sound condition. Any cracked pot should either be replaced or suitably strapped to allow insertion of the C-Cap retaining wires.

o The unique design of the C-Cap allows continuous, permanent ventilation of the chimney, as recommended by Building Research Establishment (BRE).

Why should I bother to Cap my Chimney?

Left uncapped, disused chimneys are prone to a number of major problems arising from exposure to the elements and blockage by nesting birds.

Fitting a C-Cap provides instant protection against these problems, potentially saving hundreds of pounds on costly repairs. Fitting takes seconds and can readily be carried out by any local contractor, chimney sweep etc. with the necessary equipment for roof access.

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) recommends disused chimneys should be capped off at the top with a ventilated capping.

Where a disused chimney is left uncapped, it is open to the UK weather, which annually can be relied upon to deposit several feet depth of water down the average chimney. This can give rise to damp stains appearing internally and over time it contributes to steady internal deterioration of the fabric of the stack.

Blockage of the chimney by nesting rooks will not stop the rain getting in but it will tend to trap the moisture in the chimney by blocking ventilation and preventing the moisture from drying out.

Not to mention the dreadful unhygienic mess that nesting rooks can cause and the difficulty of removing the nests once established!
